Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) has always been a couple of steps ahead of the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, in terms of hotel accommodation, and this remains the case with the recent opening of the super-luxury Park Hyatt Saigon. The city is home to some truly great hotels, many legacies of French colonial times, along with several more modern operations left behind following the departure of the Americans in the early 1970s.
Following the introduction of Doi Moi, many of these older buildings have been tastefully renovated or even completely rebuilt. Indeed, Saigon experienced something of a frenzy in hotel building during the late 1990s, and the result, as in many other cities in the region, was an oversupply of rooms (although this is now sadly at an end). However, visitors can still take advantage of pretty keen prices, with five-star rooms available from around US$125 per night with a degree of firm negotiation during the low season.
Cheaper - but very comfortable - establishments offer rooms at around US$40-80 per night while guesthouses and budget hotels often cost less than $20. Another option, especially for longer staying visitors to the city is to rent a serviced apartment (often similar in the range of facilities and services to four and five star hotels) on a weekly or monthly basis. This will give you more living & working space and is often a cheaper option than staying for long periods in top-end hotels.
Many hotels offer very good conference and convention facilities, and Saigon is fast establishing a reputation as a competitive, new destination for M.I.C.E. travel.
