The sweeping plains of Bagan stretch for several miles from the banks of the Irrawaddy River, dotted with thousands of temples, stupas and other structures - some ruins, many surprisingly well preserved. These monuments can be toured on foot, by bicycle, on horseback, by cart or by car, and the sights are a highlight of many trips to Burma.
Just southeast of the Bagan plain stands the famous Mount Popa, with its much-photographed temple clinging precariously to the summit, the entire edifice - rock and building - seemingly defying gravity. The area also boasts the remains of a petrified forest, together with a selection of intriguing temples, monasteries and pagodas. Bagan is accessible by air, river (en route to/from Mandalay) or by road. Hotels range from basic guest houses to super-luxury resort hotels, so all tastes and pockets should be suitably satisfied. Dining al fresco at one of these hotels, overlooking the plains in the moonlight, has been described as one of the most memorable moments of one visitor's life. Many visitors who have experienced the wonders of Angkor maintain that the Bagan ruins are superior, and their low profile on the tourist map should ensure that their majesty remains relatively untroubled for the time being.
