Battambang - Colonial Legacies

Relatively inaccessible to all but the most enterprising (and hardened) travellers until fairly recently, Battambang is a pretty riverside town and also Cambodia's second largest city. The provincial capital's main attractions for the visitor are its proximity to some interesting Angkor-era temple sites and its charming French-colonial legacies.

These take the form of old shop-houses lining the river,a few of which have been converted into bars, restaurants and hotel / guesthouses. The town also boasts a small but interesting museum along with several wats and a pleasant lake.

Battamabng is now relatively easy to visit with daily ferries from Siem Reap and buses from both Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. The road is now sealed and pretty smooth, making the city a favourite stop for those heading overland to or from Thailand via Poipet, and for the more intrepid traveller heading on to Paillin.
