Travel warnings relaxed for Thai-Burma border

Travel to Burma's border areas is no longer being advised against in a relaxation of travel advice to the country.

The Foreign Office amended its advice to the region last night, now warning travellers to exercise caution if they are considering visiting the area.

"You should exercise caution when travelling to border areas in Burma, particularly those close to the Thai/Burma border where there is a risk from ongoing military activity and landmines," the Foreign Office warned.

"The Burmese government restricts travel to most border areas and there are only a limited number of legal crossing points, which often close without notice. You should not attempt to cross borders illegally or enter restricted areas without permission from the Burmese authorities."

The Foreign Office warned also warned restrictions were in place for British Embassy staff that could mean consular assistance in an emergency outside of Rangoon, the largest Burmese city, may be delayed.
