Chiang Mai is Thailand's second largest city, although it is only one fortieth the size of Bangkok. Popularly known as the "Rose of the North", Chiang Mai presents a wonderful contrast to the capital. The scenery surrounding the city is almost magical - valleys of terraced rice-paddy, lush forested hills and jungle. The city itself is very attractive, especially after arriving from Bangkok, with some beautiful buildings and temples in a picturesque riverside setting.
Chiang Mai is much older than the Thai capital, having been founded in the 13th century. As such, it boasts a unique cultural heritage and a history distinct from Bangkok and the rest of the country. It was once the capital of the independent kingdom of Lanna. Chiang Mai today acts as the gateway to the north of Thailand and is a convenient base from which to explore the region. The city offers the visitor a range of distractions in the form of museums, temples and the moat and gates of the original city. Accommodation and facilities for tourists are wide ranging and plentiful, while dining out is a treat with a huge selection of restaurants covering a wide range of cuisines. Nightlife in Chiang Mai is less sophisticated than than that in the capital, but the city boasts a range of bars clubs that should cater to most tastes (and pockets). The wealth of culture and history readily available in and around the city, combined with the excellent facilities make Chiang Mai a destination that should not be missed.
