Phnom Penh offers the discerning diner plenty of choice at range of prices to suit pretty much any pocket. Small, travellers' cafes abound, in and outside of guesthouses, and most serve decent - if a little predictable - travellers' fare.
Street eating is a favourite pastime for many locals and visitors, and again the variety of dishes on offer around town is wide-ranging - and prices are dirt cheap.
Riverside cafes and restaurants are also plentiful, many exhibiting more than a little French colonial influence in both menu and architecture. Prices vary, as does the quality of food on offer. Another draw along the riverside is the range of pizza joints, all offering variations on the "Happy Pizza" theme - check out the unusual herbs!
Upmarket restaurants serving traditional Khmer cuisine and international fare are plentiful, many of the best located in the top-end hotels around town. However, there are plenty of individual, privately-run operations, many of which offer an exquisite dining experience and are therefore well patronised by the local expatriate community as well as tourists and business visitors.
Lately there has been an explosion of western-run bars and pubs all over town, many of which offer decent "pub grub" with hearty portions at reasonable prices. Add to this a fair number of Indian, Nepali and Pakistani curry houses, plus more than a few Vietnamese & Thai operations, and you'll see why no one goes hungry in Phnom Penh.
