For most, Cambodia hardly conjures images of rolling fairways and immaculately kept greens. In fact, until lately, golf would hardly have featured in anyone's mind when considering a visit to the ancient kingdom. Today however, all that has changed.
With its first course - the Royal Cambodia Golf Club - opening just outside Phnom Penh in 1999, golf finally arrived in the kingdom. Since then the sport has attracted plenty of local interest, primarily from the political and business elite, along with expatriates and tourists keen to test their skills on the challenging course, and several more golf clubs have opened for business in the country over past few years.
2006 saw the Cambodia Golf & Country Club open for business, also in Phnom Penh, closely followed in early 2007 by the Phokeethra Country Club Angkor Wat just outside Siem Reap, and later the same year the Angkor Golf Resort revealed its immaculate course, also in Siem Reap. To illustrate how far golf has come in Cambodia, the Phokeethra Country Club has been chosen for the 2007 Asian PGA Open championship, with contestants from all over the world coming to the country to play the challenging 18-hole course.
In Phnom Penh, in addition to the two golf clubs mentioned above, keen golfers will find driving ranges in the city centre, together with a selection of equipment retailers and pro shops. We list these here, along with details for local golf societies and golfers' favourite 19th holes.
