Alleged Laos plot leader hospitalized for heart disease |
|
The alleged leader of a plot to overthrow the Laotian government
has been moved from a jail cell to a local hospital after suffering
an irregular heartbeat, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office
said Friday.
Vang Pao, 77, has been jailed since his arrest this month along
with 10 others on charges of planning the overthrow the communist
government of Laos, where he served as a general of that nation's
former government before coming to the United States in 1975.
Pao, one of worldwide leaders of the Hmong people, was
transferred Wednesday from Sacramento County Jail and is expected
to remain at the hospital over the weekend for observation.
Authorities would not identify the hospital for security reasons
and gave no more details about his condition.
U.S. prosecutors said Pao and the other defendants raised
millions of dollars to fund the purchase of weapons that included
land mines, shoulder-fired Stinger missiles and machine guns.
Pao, who won fame supporting U.S. troops during the Vietnam War,
has pleaded not guilty.
