Once the capital city of Burma before British colonial rule, Mandalay enjoys a rich cultural past. Unfortunately, much of the evidence of the city's past glories have been destroyed, some by time, most by the ravages of the second world war. A major attraction in the city is the Two Snake Pagoda situated at the top of Mandalay Hill and reached by climbing 1,729 steps to the summit. From here, spectacular views can be had of the city and surrounding countryside, the Irrawaddy plain and the Shan hills delicately shrouded in mist.
In town, bustling markets, craft and antique shops and other attractions vie for the visitor's attention, while the ruins of the fort, with its imposing moated walls protecting the grounds of the now destroyed Royal Palace are another site worthy of a visit. Temples and other oases of calm and serenity abound, and the city soon casts its spell over the weary traveller. From Mandalay, tours can easily be arranged to ancient cities along the Irrawaddy River. Likewise, the colonial hill station of Maymyo with its famous Candacraig Hotel, is a convenient side-trip from the city. Accommodation ranges from five-star luxury to cheap and sometimes cheerful guest houses, with price ranges across a similar spectrum. Dining out is easy, and many cuisines are represented here. Night life however, is somewhat limited. Perhaps no longer justifying Kipling's adulation, Mandalay remains an intriguing and rewarding destination, and is a major port of call for most travellers in Myanmar.
