Once known as the "Naples of the East", Ngapali is rated the top beach destination in Burma. Located in Rakhaing State, Ngapali beach lies on the tranquil azure waters of the Bay of Bengal, with three kilometres of find white sand backed with gently swaying palm trees. At just 35 minutes by air from Rangoon, Ngapali is an ideal destination for those seeking blue seas, white sands, great seafood, peace and tranquility, and stunning sunset views.
For now the beach remains petty quiet although Ngapali is increasingly attracting tour groups from around the world. Hotel and resort accommodation runs from the pretty basic (at around US$5-10 per night), to the super luxury - around US$175 will buy you a night at the fabulous Aureum Palace resort. Dining out is focussed on seafood - and Ngapali can lay claim to perhaps the best seafood restaurants in Burma. At night the road behind the beach bustles with activity as a string of family-run restaurants serve up tasty dishes to hungry tourists. After dinner, visitors can unwind with a cocktail or two at one of the resort bars, but don't expect too much in the way of action - no noisy beachside bars at this tranquil destination. Other attraction at Ngapali include snorkeling and diving - the coral's not bad and there's plenty of marine life - and a decent 18-hole golf course about 15 minutes away by car. Finally, take time to check out the numerous fishing villages dotted along the beach and nearby bays, where visitors can witness a traditional way of life pretty much unchanged in centuries.
