Just a little out of town lie the "killing fields"of the former Khmer Rouge regime. A Formerly a peaceful orchard and Chinese cemetery, the Khmer Rouge used the area to summarily execute and dump the bodies of an estimated 17,000 men, women and children. 

Phnom Penh's National Museum is another "must do"on any visit the city. A stunning colonial-Khmer building painted a distinctive red ochre, the museum houses an incredible collection of Angorian-era statuary, alongside more recent collections and Buddhist figures.

Phnom Penh's Royal Palace is a must see on any visit to Cambodia's capital. A complex of more than 15 buildings, including the stunning Silver Pagoda, the palace remains the official residence of HM King Norodom Sihamoni. 

The Silver Pagoda is a compound located on the North side of the palace complex. It features a a royal temple officially called Preah Vihear Preah Keo Morakot but is commonly referred to as Wat Preah Keo.

Formerly the Tuol Svay Prey High School, named after a Royal ancestor of King Norodom Sihanouk, the five school buildings were used by the Khmer Rouge as an interrogation centre and prison from 1975 who renamed the complex "Security Prison 21" (S-21). Although a somewhat harrowing experience, a visit to S-212 is a must do on any itinerary as it truly sets in perspective the everyday horrors of the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime.
