Bronze pagoda opens near Halong Bay

A mountain-top Chua Dong (bronze pagoda) was opened Tuesday at a famous Buddhist site in Vietnam’s Quang Ninh province. Situated on the 1,068m Yen Tu mountain, Chua Dong is set amid ancient pagodas and temples and centuries-old trees, 40km from the World Heritage site of Ha Long Bay.

January 28, 2007 marked three years – or 1,096 days - that Born Samnang and Sok Sam Oeun have spent in prison since their arrests for the assassination of prominent trade unionist Chea Vichea. To mark the anniversary of their arrests, Cambodian NGOs and trade unions launched a public campaign that will continue until their release from prison.

Thailand partly lifts martial law

Martial law has been lifted in more than half of Thailand, two months after the move was authorised, a government spokesman said. The move means Bangkok and 41 of Thailand's 76 provinces are no longer under the special restrictions imposed in the wake of September's coup.

Burma 'orders Christians to be wiped out'

The military regime in Burma is intent on wiping out Christianity in the country, according to claims in a secret document believed to have been leaked from a government ministry. Entitled "Programme to destroy the Christian religion in Burma", the incendiary memo contains point by point instructions on how to drive Christians out of the state.
