Hoi An is mecca for serious shoppers. The streets of the ancient town are packed with stores of all manner of boutiques, galleries, tailors, textile shops and home decor stores. Visitors to Hoi An often opt to have a suit of clothes run up at one of the numerous tailor in the town - this usually takes around 48 hours or so, and designs can be copied from originals, pictures or magazines. A good bet is to bring your favourite clothing catelogue along with you on your travels. Another bargain here is original artworks. Once again, the town is home to a huge number of art galleries, many of which offer seriously cheap works that will look great on the wall at home. Hoi An also boasts a few more up-market galleries displaying pricey works by some of Vietnam's leading artists - not cheap but Vietnamese art is becoming increasingly collectible. Also scattered about the streets are Hoi An's ubiquitous lantern shops where just a few bucks will secure you a beautiful traditional lantern or lamp shade. Textiles and embroidery are also plentiful in Hoi An and make for an ideal souvenir or gift. Finally, seek out the traditional carving shops and the gong shop on Nguyen Thai Hoc, the charitable shop on the same street and - as always in Vietnam - check the quality before you buy and BARGAIN HARD.
