Si Phan Don - 4000 Islands

Si Phan Don - or Four Thousand Islands - is for many one of the highlights of any trip to Laos. Situated close to the border with Cambodia in the deep south of the country, the islands were created as the mighty Mekong river fans out spreading across the plain in a series of channels before falling spectacularly over the Tat Somphamit and Khone falls as the river makes its way towards the southern neighbour.

Attractions for the visitor include the lush scenery, the famous - and endangered - Irrawaddy dolphins, and many come here just to kick back and enjoy the almost untouched natural ambiance of the place before travlleing on into Laos proper, or down to Cambodia to continue their journeys.

Accommodation is based mainly on one of two island groups - Don Khong and Don Det / Don Khon, with cheap guesthouses and bungalows galore on Don Khon and Don Det (often referred to a riverside Khao San), plus a few more upmarket options on Don Khong, the largest island in the group.

Eating and drinking is centered around the guesthouses, with all the usual backpackers' favourites available for extremely keen prices, although there are a few decent Lao restaurants scattered about the islands. Check out the northern beach on DOn Det where occasional gatherings replete with beer and music often run throughout the night.

Activities run from just soaking up the views, the spectacular sunrises and sunsets - check which side of the island you are staying to catch these - and generally strolling or cycling about the islands. Boat trips are another popular passtime, as is seeking out the sometimes elusive Irrawaddy dolphins.

Internet is avaiolable, but be aware that Don Det has yet to be hooked up to the electrical grid. Also, look out for the poisonous snakes here - there is no hospital in Si Phan Don.
