The Royal Trophy golf tournament opposing
teams from Asia and Europe has been postponed as a mark of respect
for the sister of Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Princess
Galyani, who died from cancer on Wednesday at the age of 84.
The third edition of the event, which had
been scheduled for January 11-13 at the Amata Spring Country Club
in Bangkok will be rescheduled at a later date.
A statement on Thursday from the European
PGA Tour said: "The Royal Trophy has been postponed as Thailand
goes into a period of mourning following the death of Her Royal
Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, the elder sister of His Majesty
King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
"The Thai government announced a 15-day
mourning period and asked that festive activities be suspended
during this time as a mark of respect."
The Royal Trophy, which was donated by the
king, is inspired by the enormously popular Ryder Cup, where teams
from the United States and Europe compete.
