Thailand: Troops deployed amid protests |
Thailand's government deployed 2,100 troops in Bangkok on July 28
after rallies against the coup-installed government turned violent
July 22.
The security boost comes ahead of an August 19 referendum on an
army-backed constitution, which the government says will set the
stage for elections by the end of the year but opponents say will
help the military maintain power. Authorities say a state of
emergency might be declared in Bangkok and 2,200 additional troops
deployed if rallies turn violent again.
