A draft of Thailand's new constitution released Wednesday would limit the prime minister's office to two four-year terms.
The draft, to be presented to the public later this month prior to a referendum on it, also will reduce the size of Parliament to 400 from the current 500 members, and that of the Senate to 160 from 200 members, the BBC reported. The new senators, however, would be appointed rather than elected, which could trigger criticisms. The draft was drawn up by a 35-member committee appointed by the military council that took power last September after a bloodless coup that toppled Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. The draft also would reduce the number of lawmakers needed to introduce a no-trust motion against the prime minister to just a quarter from the current two-thirds, the report said. The committee dropped a controversial proposal to have a non-elected prime minister, the report said. After the referendum, the interim government has promised hold elections before the end of the year.
