Millions of dollars donated to help those
devastated by the Boxing Day tsunami has been wasted on politics,
according to news reports.
Australians donated $400 million to
rebuild parts of Asia practically destroyed by the 2004
tsunami.
The Australian reports many of the
contributions have gone towards political projects, instead of
going to help those most in need.
Oxfam has spent money on a program to
change attitudes towards women,/ another to instruct Thai workers
on strike action.
The charities have defended the projects
saying initially the money was spent on rebuilding but the focus
has now shifted to help change local attitudes.
Head of Oxfam Andrew Hewitt has told Jason
Morrison they are providing people with critical essentials.
“People need shelter, they need a
roof over their heads, they need enough food, they need to have an
income, and they need to have access to medical care. There is
absolutely no question that those things are critical.”
