Vientiane

Vientiane - Laid Back Charm

The Lao capital presents a series of apparent contradictions to the visitor - a nation's capital city where the population often seems to be fast asleep. A sense of timelessness permeates the air of the city, its tree-lined boulevards planted by the French lead to spectacular, ancient temples and shrines, and a universal sleepiness envelops the capital for much of the time.

The Mekong river is central to both the city and life within Vientiane. The capital's agricultural roots owe their existence to the river, and it remains an essential transport artery for the city, as well as an important source of food.

The Lao capital might be classified as a city, but that is using the noun in its loosest possible definition. Vientiane can easily be explored on foot, and a leisurely stroll might take in one or more of the myriad markets dotted around town, with a lunch stop followed perhaps by a visit to a wat (temple) or two, maybe including the impressive That Luang with its exquisite golden spire piercing the blue skies and visible all over the city.

There are plenty of opportunities for shopping and sightseeing in Vientiane, and a good choice of accommodation and dining options means a stay of a few days is definitely recommended in this city which often sleeps.
