Ho Chi Minh City Television (HTV) and Vietnam Advertising Co. will launch a Vietnamese version of American Idol and the UK’s Pop Idol, under the name Vietnam Idol, in April.
The competition is open to all Vietnamese nationals aged between 16 and 30, except those who are already under contract with music studios, or have won other musical awards. In the qualifying rounds the contestants will be given a chance to show off their musical and performance talent, and face the prospect of being cut from the show through a process of elimination. The 10 finalists chosen by the audience will compete in the final, which is scheduled for September this year. Preliminary qualifying rounds will take place in Can Tho City on April 7, Hanoi on April 15, Danang on April 22 and HCMC on May 2. The organizers said that contestants must perform pop music, and the show will run on different themes. Like the other Idol shows, Vietnam is following the format provided by EU company that started it all – Fremantle Media – using three judges who provide commentary and opinion on the performances of the contestants. The judges of Vietnam Idol will be musicians Tuan Khanh and Ha Dung, and singer Siu Black. The organizers expect the music show to attract some 10,000 contestants nationwide. It took HTV and its partner two years to buy the rights of the American Idol format for Vietnam, HTV general director Huynh Van Nam told local reporters on Wednesday. The shows, sponsored by Clear shampoo brand of Unilever Vietnam, will be broadcast on HTV9 channel and on seven major television stations in Hanoi, Hai Phong, Danang, Hue and Can Tho.
