Vietnam kicks off Indochina heritage festival |
Vietnam’s central Quang Nam Province will open a festival
Wednesday highlighting the heritage and traditional cultures of the
three countries of the Indochina region – Cambodia, Laos, and
Vietnam.
The Quang Nam Heritage Festival will take place from June 27 to 30
in and around the historic town of Hoi An.
The third edition of the biennial festival will open Wednesday
evening in Hoi An with a show featuring performances by art troupes
from Cambodia and Laos together with their Vietnamese counterparts.
Cambodia will be represented by artists from Siem Reap Province,
and Laos by performers from Luang Prabang and Champasak Province.
Vietnam boasts five UNESCO-listed world heritage sites, two of
which – Hoi An Town and the ancient Hindu sanctuary of My Son
– are in Quang Nam province.
The highlights will include night festivals, a show on Indochinese
culture, a food festival featuring specialties from the region, and
a seminar on the Indochina cultural heritage road.
Many entertainment activities will also be launched, including kite
flying, boat races, a vintage bike rally, sea diving, and a beach
volleyball tournament.
The rally, with bicycles and motorbikes made between the 1920s and
70s, will start from the Palm Garden Resort in Hoi An Wednesday
afternoon and arrive at the inauguration of the Quang Nam -
Heritage Festival.
The next morning the group will arrive at the My Son Sanctuary
where theywill visit the famous Phuoc Kieu bronze casting village
and the Duy Xuyen traditional silk village.
The rally wraps up that evening with the winner being handed Queen
of the Old Bikes Award. Visitors will be taken on excursions to
traditional craft villages in the historic town of Hoi An and Dien
Ban and Duy Xuyen districts.
The Heritage Festival has been held since 2003 to promote tourism
in the central province.
